New Brunswick is one of three Canadian Maritime Provinces and thus has a lot of advantages for its 750,500 residents. Its urban areas have service-based economies that are mainly in the health care field, education, retail, finance and insurance. This means there are plenty of jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers of any age.

Tourism is big business in New Brunswick. There are five beautiful scenic drives for visitors and residents to enjoy, winding through the pristine scenery and along the ocean shoreline. There are historical memorials, water parks, zoos, waterfowl parks amusement parks, museums and other educational and fun attractions. There are provincial parks and beaches as well as national parks and public aquariums that everyone can enjoy. You’re never more than a few minutes away from rivers, lakes, trails, golf courses or beautiful community or public parks. You can enjoy a film festival, an evening at the theatre, a concert or a symphony or spend the day indulging in more than a dozen activities including rollerblading, hiking, biking and canoeing. Since New Brunswick is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean you can enjoy deep sea fishing as well as clamming and beachcombing.

New Brunswick has a very healthy and growing economy. For example, Fredericton’s economy is mainly involved with universities, government services and the military while Moncton is a distribution center for commerce, retail and distribution because of their rail and air facilities. Moncton is also the fastest growing city in the province with an economy based on information technology, commercial and retail sectors and transportation and distribution. There are heavy industry and port facilities in Saint John, which is also a destination for cruise ships.

The rural economy depends on mining, farming, fishing and forestry. Central regions are heavily forested; there are many small sawmill operations as well as large paper mills in Saint John, Nackawic, Edmundston and Miramichi. The province also mines potash, lead and zinc as well as tapping into oil and natural gas deposits. Potatoes are the main crop for farmers and there are dairy and cattle farms scattered throughout the province. Atlantic salmon also makes a contribution to the economy, as does lobster, king crab and scallops.

The most common occupations in the cities are in sales and office administration, management and service occupations. The most common jobs listed are physical therapists, administrative assistants, project managers, occupational therapists, business analysts and java development.

You’ll find that property is priced lower than in most other provinces and New Brunswick has one of the lowest crime rates in Canada. A city resident spends less than 20 minutes a day commuting because of the great public transit systems. With exceptional schools, universities and colleges and superb health care facilities, New Brunswick is a great place to live for people of all ages.
