Newfoundland & Labrador is a province of 156,000 square miles in eastern Canada and has 2 parts; the island of Newfoundland and the mainland called Labrador, which is located northwest of the island.

As of 2010 the province had a population of 509,000 people and 94% of them live on the island and smaller surrounding islands.

This area has interesting weather. In fact, because it spans 5.5 degrees of latitude, there is a variety of weather and six climate types, something for everyone. Newfoundland has cool summers and a polar tundra climate while southern Labrador has a subarctic climate of long cold winters and short, mild summers. Newfoundland has an average summer temperature of 61° and 32° in the winter. Labrador is a bit harsher but summer temps can get up to 78°.

Newfoundland and Labrador used to have a depressed economy due to the collapse of the cod fishery but now that oil has been discovered offshore, the economy is healthy and growing. The service industry plays a big part in the GDP, including financial services, government offices and health care. There is mining, oil production and manufacturing.

You’ll find affordable housing in a variety of price ranges here, with homes beginning at around $65,000 with the average of about $200,000. If you prefer to rent an apartment, townhouse, detached house or condominium you can expect to pay $550-1500 per month.

Newfoundland & Labrador is a stunningly beautiful place to visit or to live. You’ll see dramatic coastlines busy with seabird colonies, plentiful marine life and thick forests as well as barrens and ancient rock formations. Labrador has the towering Torngat Mountain range accenting a sub-Arctic tundra in the north. Allergy sufferers will be glad to hear there is no ragweed and there are also no snakes, raccoons, skunks or poisonous spiders or insects. You can watch 22 kinds of whales and marvel at Iceberg Alley while you enjoy the millions of seabirds. There are moose, black bears and salmon that you can see return to their spawning grounds on the salmon ladder.

Blueberries, blackberries and cloudberries are plentiful, scattered along the roads and highways. In the spring you can see wildflowers covering the landscape clear to the horizon.

Newfoundland and Labrador is a perfect area if you like outdoor activity. There is camping, hiking, sailing, bird watching, diving, fishing, golf, skiing, hunting and kayaking. If you’re a hunter you’ll never come back empty handed!

This piece of paradise is not only for outdoorsmen, however. There are dozens of cities and towns that offer cultural attractions, casual to fine dining, festivals and just about any type of family or individual activity that you can think of. Most people love Newfoundland & Labrador because they can have all the advantages of city life yet be within minutes of pristine wilderness and all types of recreation.
